ONE of the hottest young superstars in basketball right now is Steph Curry. For a lot of fans, the sharp-shooting point guard represents the next evolution in the game. His talent on the court has led him to win an NBA championship as well as back-toback MVP honors, all before the age of 30. To find out what makes Curry such a great player, we asked professional basketball analysts Polo Bustamante and Andrew Santiago to identify and break down his strengths. Here’s what we learned: He has superb ball handling Bustamante: When a big man gets switched onto him, it’s like a kid in a candy store. I can imagine the glee on Curry’s face imagining what dribble move to put on a slower, less-coordinated big man. Santiago: Steph is able to dribble circles around the league’s best defenders. Playing against Steph is tough because you never know what he’ll do with the ball. He has an excellent shooting touch Bustamante: In the ‘90s, players were immortalized on posters through dunks or fancy layups. Because of Curry’s rise, it’s now possible to land on a poster (or land in a GIF) via a sweet, sweet looking jumper. Santiago: Steph’s jumper is so pure that 25-foot bombs are like layups to him. He gets his shot off so quick. He’s amazing with a defender on him, what more when he’s wide open? He moves well without the ball Bustamante: Curry’s actually more dangerous when he doesn’t have the ball. He can run around one way and then disappear in the middle of a screen, and then pop up behind the three-point line, ready to take a shot. The guy practically teleports all over the floor without the ball. Santiago: Steph navigates screens with ease. This helps him get open shots within his team’s system. He doesn’t hesitate to shoot Bustamante: What makes Curry such an assassin is that he’s got a gunner’s mentality. Even if he’s missed his last 20 shots, he won’t hesitate to take the next one. He can be having a bad game and still kill you with a buzzer-beater. Santiago: When the game is on the line, all eyes are on Steph. He doesn’t think twice about taking a potential buzzer- beater. That’s how confident he is in his shooting skills. He’s unfazed by taller players Bustamante: Smaller kids nowadays should really watch Curry work. He’s not just a shooter. He has superb footwork and a high-arcing shot that makes him such a great player. He can get shots over guys twice his size. Santiago: What makes Steph so relatable to local basketball fans is that his build isn’t so far from the average Pinoy. But he plays bigger than his frame and has found a way to be effective despite being smaller than other players. He knows how to find teammates Bustamante: Sure, Curry is known more for his shooting. But he’s also a wizard with the ball and isn’t afraid to get creative when passing. Curry knows how to squeeze passes through the tightest of spaces, and is able to get the ball to his teammates right where they want it. Santiago: Steph is a point guard, first and foremost. So he understands that he sets the pace for his team. His passing is playful and crafty, but it also makes his teammates better.
